On Mother’s Day, a military veteran in his 60s was arrested for impeding a cop helping code enforcement cite an open restaurant. 24 hours before, a multiple felon released from jail on our zero bail coronavirus rule stole a Honda and got in a high speed chase through a residential neighborhood. On arrest, he tried to bite a cop. A police dog bit him instead.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Today, a city council member was cited for assaulting a protester who showed up at his apartment.

Today, I accepted a pro bono case representing a jiu jitsu studio cited for being open. I would prefer people use due process and hearings as a civil way to address their grievances.

I don’t know what the answer is, but something has to give, and soon. If I wanted this shit, I would move to Florida. I think Jules can explain what I would like to communicate.

We have a PM thats been involved in multiple scandels, is trying to turn the country into a dictatorship under covid, and is more concerned about his possible seat on the UN and bringing in more refugees than the people of his country.

Things arent that much better else- wh ere.

Trump is an idiot. The job Trudeau is doing is much better... and the infection and death rate on a per-capita basis proves that.

You’re a fool to want Trump over Trudeau.

“Things arent that much better else-where.”

That’s absolutely false. Countries like Canada have a per-capita infection/death rate that is half of the USA’s.

And places like Australia and New Zealand which took draconian measures did even better.

“ is trying to turn the country into a dictatorship under covid,”

That’s false too. If he truly wanted that, all he’d have to do is invoke the War Measures Act.

If you don’t like Trudeau, fine.  But don’t make up bullshit.   And when it comes to scandals, Trump is 1000 times worse that Trudeau.   There’s no contest.  It’s a night and day difference.

I moved last year from Texas to Florida because of work. People in Florida drive slower (older, Yankee retirees!), there’s the infrequent alligator-in-the-house stories, and I see a lot more mobile home/trailer parks here. Otherwise, abou t the same. So I now embrace being Florida man (beaches!).

Floridians don’t care about the stigma because they’re at the beach.

The reason you hear all the crazy stories from Florida, is because access to the police reports  is way easier there than in most states. If you had the same level of access everywhere, you’d get a more evenly spread of crazy.

Much like my political views, I am solidly in the center on this stuff. I think it’s something we need to take very seriously. We have lost more Americans to this virus in the last couple months, than all the years we were in Vietnam. That said, we cannot continue to have the entire world shut down, it is unsustainable.

I think my state has done a reasonable job at this (and I rarely compliment my state on anything, most of of time Illinois sucks). All retail stores are back open, but if they’re non essential stores, they’re open for curbside pickup. The local beloved garden center has remained open throughout, with curbside pickup and reduced hours. J udging from the amount of traffic I’m seeing there, they’re doing just fine.

We have been ordering takeout once a week from our favorite local restaurants. They’re mostly telling me that business is OK, and that they’ll be able to survive. I actually had one of them turn my order away, because their kitchen was too backed up. They told me to call back in 40 minutes.

I’m seeing a lot more traffic in the last couple weeks. The first few weeks of this mess, I could ride my scooter at rush hour on roads I normally wouldn’t touch at anytime of the day. For those who are local, I rode Route 83 at 4:00 in the afternoon last month, and there wasn’t another car within 800 feet of me. Now, I’m back to staying away from it.

The thing that worries me more than anything, is people’s mental health. I’m really worried about my wife. She’s interacted with precisely four other adults in the last two months. My kids have been literally begging, “Can we PLEASE go somewhere besides a parking lot! ?!” My oldest is even asking to go to the grocery store, which is a place she has always hated going, just to go somewhere and do something.

We are social creatures.  Something has to give.

Trump has very little to do with the infection rate in the US. Not that we even know whether having a low infection rate matters. I’m in Arizona, and our governor’s decisions have much more weight than Trump’s in this situation. Which is a good thing, as what works in New York, may be a bad idea here.

The metro area I live in has significantly more people in it than the population of New Zealand. There are twice as many people in my state than all of New Zealand.   Shit, m ore people live in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania than the whole nation of Canada. Comparing us to anywhere else in the world is not wise.

His incompetent administration absolutely has played a big role. You have to have your head completely up your ass to be so willfully blind to it.

“ The metro area I live in has significantly more people in it than the population of New Zealand.“

Do you know what “per-capita” means? It means your response to what I said is irrelevant.  It means that due to the much shittier response in the USA, the average person is much more likely to get sick in the USA compared to Canada, Australia or New Zealand.

I’m less concerned that he took them away and more concerned HOW he took them away.

normally, we have the bill passed through parliament and then its voted on. (and most MPs and chiefs of police have voiced their displeasure over this)

with this one, he just put it through. Which is basically a dictatorship.

the bill isnt going to do ANYTHING to stop gun crime (criminals dont follow the law. how is this going to help?)

its going to cost tax payers 6$ 00 million

its g o ing to drive a cou ple of company out of busi ness (canadi a n firearms manufacturers

and some of the guns that are on that list have already been banned for decades (since 1979). So are you that obtuse to ban something twice, or are you admitting that bans dont work?

I would honestly have less of an issue if he banned pistols (which are the main gun used in gun crimes, aint no one hijacking you with a .308 winchester)   but no, get rid of hunting and sporting rifles. moron

The flu also killed more Americans than the Vietnam war in the ‘17-18 season (around 80k people) , but no one ran that headline back then. That was with a vaccine and antivirals, which should be more concerning.

You’re going to almost always have a lower morbidity rate in a place with lower population density. Not surprisingly, our hardest hit areas are our most densly populated, regardless of whether they’re filled with Trump loving rednecks or not. You have to really screw up to switch that around.

However, interestingly, one of the highest morbidity rates in North America is in an area of very low population density, and they have their own president - the Navajo Nation. This is mostly because they have third world infrastructure, but that was an issue long before Trump showed up, and no liberal savior has helped them out over the years.

Reading a statistic, and actually having the ability to analyze it, are two very different things.

Kinja'd!!! DipodomysDeserti > shop-teacher
05/13/2020 at 14:32

Kinja'd!!!1

The Flu season generally begins in the Fall, peaks in December, and is done by the end of February. It sometimes, in rare instances, carries through to May. I know in Arizona our first confirmed case was at the end of January, but all indications are that many more people have this than confirmed tests indicate. Even if it ends up being a longer time period, we’ve been fighting the three mutations of the flu for centuries.

Problem is now when you compare it to the flu, all anyone thinks is Trump, when comparing it to how we used to handle the flu before vaccinations would actually be of some help. Also, the flu might actually be a whole lot worse than this thing.

Not every person who died was ever tested for anything , and New York was already having a very bad flu season. At my sister’s hospital they were assuming anyone with symptoms that failed a flu test had Covid, which is a pretty bad way to build any sort of useable statistics. I’m sure her hospital isn’t a whole lot different than any other.

We’ve been panicking from the get go on this thing

“b ut that was an issue long before Trump showed up, and no liberal savior has helped them out over the years.”

The issue isn’t about liberal vs conservative.

The issue is about competence vs incompetence.

The Trump gang is incompetent. They have no idea of what to do... and it shows in the data. It shows in the lack of testing. It shows in the lack of coordination.

“Not surprisingly, our hardest hit areas are our most densly populated,”

Oh really? Well if that was true, China should have had many more infections and deaths than the USA.

Except that’s not reality... and it’s clear you have absolutely NO idea about what you’re talking about.

Until recently, I would have told you Doug Ford in Ontario was our Trump equivallent.

Except guess what? Lately Ford has cut out all the rhetoric and BS, is following the advice of medical experts, has been taking criticism gracefully and has hit is stride as a *leader* (rather than merely being a politician).

Of course, nobody will have a direct 45 clone - something like that can only come from a society as dysfunctional as modern day USA.  I’d expect Canadian populists to be less intense just based on their location.

Does Kevin O’Leary still have potential? I remember hearing about him - boomer, mouthy, coddled background, TV carnival barker, but I recall him having more liberal social values and not pandering to religious psychos and outright nazis like 45 does without shame.

I was being facetious.

On a more serious note, I don’t think he has a snowball’s-chance-in-hell of winning. For starters, he’s not even one of the leading candidates to lead the Conservative Party .

And t hat boating accident he was involved in that killed two people makes it even less likely he’ll ever be a leading candidate.

Why does he need to lead the Conservative Party first before having a crack at being Prime Minister?

Well o ne huge difference between the Canadian and US political systems is in Canada,   you DON’T vote for a president directly.

In Canada, the political party nominates a leader who may become Prime Minister if the party gets the most votes . A nd as a voter, you only vote for the given political party.

The only people who get to vote for a Prime Minister directly are the people in the riding that the given party leader happens to be running in.

So in the US system, even though a lot of Rep ub licans can’t stand Trump, they can’t do much about it. It all goes by the electoral college. The party can try to influence that, but they don’t have direct control.

Trump in the Canadian system would have to gain the majority support of his party first in order to become party leader. After that, him and h is party would have to win an election.

In the Canadian system, I think it’s very unlikely a true Trump-type would make it past the first step regardless of how much money he has.

On top of all that, in Canada, it’s much harder to buy your way into politics the way people can in the US.

Sure, having money helps... but it’s not as huge of a factor as it is in the US.

It shouldn’t be a political issue, but it has certainly been made into one.

China is not a free nation, and actually locked people down. TBH I’d rather get sick and die then live one day in China.

You’re commenting on local issues from an entirely different nation, so I’d hold back on giving your opinion on how much other people know. I have daily conversations about these topics with my sister, who is a Covid nurse in my city. My perspective is much different than yours. Unfortunately, due to an 18th century relic, one only kinda sorta has a direct vote in the US, ruined by proportion. That college you mention messes things up, so common sense prevails by the vote, but the mess unfolds anyway. And maybe related to that, cool link, weird seeing leading politicos not in their 70s.

I wonder how many Rs actually don’t like 45. The party seems to have slowly but surely gone deplorable over the past several years. This is not the party of Lincoln or Ike, or even Nixon.

In the US, the real golden rule is the law of the land. That’s how hardworking brave warriors for justice and progress like  DeVos, Perdue, Kushner, etc ascend to their positions. I have some faith Canadians aren’t as selfish and shortsighted as their American counterparts (especially on the so-called right), and won’t find a real equivalent to the American experience of the past few years. I also laugh at the dramatic “dictatorship” whine above. Then again, 5 years ago, I wouldn’t have believed the current shitshow would be real, either.
